Shouma's intro line has been shortened to "I'm Shouma." lol
Wasn't expecting a Granuto to pick Shouma up. I see Toei's making hay with the cave shooting lcoation . Oh, we're getting Shouma's backstory
Do they sell dark candy yet? Hey kids, dark candy is people!!
Liking Shouma's outfit this week. Very colorful
Gdi, take that hand down, Hanto
I like that the Granuto world looks like it's hand drawn in crayon outside the window
lol, that grate doesn't seem that heavy
intersting that Shouma doesn't have the trope invinicibility during his transformation
Shouma why didn't you chase down the female Agent?
Now does it have to be a special item that cuts bound people or could Hanto have done it with scissors?
I guess this is Shouma's first time hearing the name Kamen RIder
love the contrast between Shouma color torture flashbacks and his current colorful life
Guess we're finding out sooner than later whether Hanto's boss is a Granuto or not
Guess we got some half answers through the grand uncle. We see Wonka working on something and Hanto helps to save a bunch of people. It's a steady step forward, just not a great leap

Re: KR Gavv 05
note: this post is being made after having watched the raw version without subs.
so, the dad's name is Bushu, if I was hearing that right? I wonder if that means Tongue in another language, or if it's a different mouth part, given our great-uncle is named Teeth in Italian.
also, given that name and the fact he did the surgery on Shouma, I'll be referring to him as Dr. Teeth, and will be expecting The Electric Mayhem at some point before the end of the season.
and who's doing the uncle's voice? it sounds a bit like Yohei Tadano, who does the JP dub voice for Rick Sanchez in Rick and Morty stuff.
the more I look at his face, the more I think Uncle Teeth designed Shouma's gave to look like himself, which explains Shouma's having a shape on top like eyes and all while other granuto just have mouths.
do you think the granuto at the end attacking Hanto's boss was actually after Hanto's boss? or was he going there to attack Hanto because he's been nosing around granuto stuff too much, they somehow knew that Hanto was supposed to be working there, and didn't know Hanto ran off to follow a rumor so his boss was there instead? the agent who gave him that bonus assignment was the same color as the one that was watching Hanto and his boss last episode, after all. so who knows which of them he was watching or why. could've been spying on Hanto because he's been snooping, checking on the boss because he's a part time worker for the Stomachs and overheard Hanto talking about investigating granuto, or might've been watching the boss for some other reason and he really was the target.
and given we learned last episode that Shouma wasn't shrunken with his mom, either because of his gavv or being a granuto in general, and the episode cuts out before we can see anything happen to the boss, we still don't know for sure if he's a granuto or not.
and that thing that got brought up last week about the main characters having taste related things going on with their names cited Hanto's name as having the kanji for "spicy"? when I mentioned that to other people because of my whole "Taste Buds"/"Tomodaji" idea, someone pointed out that that kanji can also be used for "Bitter", and given the word bitter appears in the title for next week's episode, I wonder if it's meant to be one way or the other, or if they're going for both.

Got you covered! It's Bouche/mouth in french. Just to check, I think teeth is denti in Italian, tooth is dente? Can someone confirm?

huh, spot on guess. Rick eh?

oh yeah. talk about a maker's mark
>do you think the granuto at the end attacking Hanto's boss was actually after Hanto's boss?
by appearance it looks like it's going after Hanto's boss because Hanto knows too much and is getting too close, but we know the Stomach know nothing about Hanto and are only now just catching wind of Shouma's actions. I'm guessing Hanto's boss is a Granuto traitor of some sort?

helps that there's currently "Rick and Morty: the Anime" airing on Adult Swim with the original JP audio and English subs when it airs on Toonami, so I've been hearing him a lot for the past few weeks.>and who's doing the uncle's voice? it sounds a bit like Yohei Tadano, who does the JP dub voice for Rick Sanchez in Rick and Morty stuff.

actually, looking into it more, I'm not sure it's "bitter" as in the taste, and more as it relates to emotion. apparently, the connection is that the kanji on its own means spicy, but can be used in "辛い" which translates as bitter, but also as heartbreaking.>and that thing that got brought up last week about the main characters having taste related things going on with their names cited Hanto's name as having the kanji for "spicy"? when I mentioned that to other people because of my whole "Taste Buds"/"Tomodaji" idea, someone pointed out that that kanji can also be used for "Bitter", and given the word bitter appears in the title for next week's episode, I wonder if it's meant to be one way or the other, or if they're going for both.

so unless I'm just really off the mark, maybe the intent is that it's a taste term as spicy for the naming convention, but the "bitter" is emotional and is meant as a bilingual pun because bitter has two meanings in english? in the same vein as my "tomodaji" joke being based on how "buds" having different english meanings in context?

oh right, bitter as in the emotion. Tsurai definitely has the "painful, suffering, heart-breaking" feeling to it. If mr editor isn't a Granuto, then he may be an early death of a semi-regular to motivate the hero

Oh damn, that's a pretty good observation. From the cast list on the Asahi website, even Shouma's mom is in one scene of the opening...Connie_Edogawa wrote: ↑Sun Sep 29, 2024 12:31 am he has been around the longest of any character that isn't in the opening sequence. that doesn't bode well for him.

And come to think of it, Hanto losing his master would force him to go hang out with Shouma and Sachika. The opening's full of spoilers/foreshadowing when you think about it

So, who was expecting a domestic abuse backstory in this show? Because I wasn't.

That's correct. Dente is the singular, Denti is the plural. As in the phrase "Al dente", literally "to/at the tooth", although prepositions don't really translate 1:1 between languages. Finally, my Italian degree is paying off.

Shouma's Gavv makes much more sense now; I was wondering why it looked artificial if it was an organ. Hanto feels impressively distinct from the edgy secondary archetype, and also already makes for an excellent investigator character: he has a personal reason for looking into the case, but once he makes a finding, he prioritizes lives and the truth above his emotional investment.
I suspect I missed some dialogue, though I'm not sure how to feel about Shouma's great granduncle happening to be on Earth. How did he find Shouma? When and why did he leave his world? Why does Shouma not remember how he got there? (Actually, looking at every prior episode opening, never mind that last part.)
I suspected the bright palette wasn't going to reflect the show's actual tone, but even most of the darker recent entries had their first act look like more or less brainless fun. They're really emphasizing the tragedy of Shouma's situation, but the level of detail feels more like a Gaiden/TTFC special. It doesn't feel utterly out of place the way I thought Spanner's two-part backstory was in the middle of a more happy-go-lucky season, but it's pretty gritty.takenoko wrote: ↑Sun Sep 29, 2024 9:38 amI'm honestly getting pretty uncomfortable with the mom's situation. Re: KR Gavv 05
I like it, at least as far as a story element goes. We see two different sides of Bushu's 'love'; from the Great-Uncle's perspective, who saw it as a man whom fell in love at first sight and was doing everything to protect his family, and Shoma, the child that only saw his father as the villain to his mother's suffering.takenoko wrote: ↑Sun Sep 29, 2024 9:38 amI'm honestly getting pretty uncomfortable with the mom's situation. So different flavors produce different effects huh? Kinda curious how they're going to go about this in later episodes.
Spoiler
Second Rider next episode. Interested in seeing that device he uses to transform with. It looks like a gun or some kind of knuckle type weapon.[/spoiler
Solid episode this week as well. We got backstory, plot progression, and hints at deeper plots to be explored in later episodes. I wonder if the handywoman is gonna get some Rider gear too?

I would not let the kid touch the sewage soaked toy before sanitizing it... And Shouma, please wash your hands before eating after touching the sewage grate...
There's no way the agents didn't see Hanto's head and hands hard pressed on the window.
Nice of Hanto to not pull out his phone like a modern day bystander to film the fight and actually go help the people in need.
Shouma's internal conflict from last episode was resolved with his own experience. His father kept him and mom unhappy so they won't be turned into candies. Shouma didn't want to do they same to others.
So, the agents are Stomach family's minions and their visor are color coded. The ones who chased Shouma in ep1 were red, Lango's agents. Jeebh and Shita's were blue. The orange one was probably Nyelv's as hinted in the preview.

Dente Stomach
The suit actor who plays Dente was veteran suit actor Okamoto Jirou (KR Black, KR Ouja, Den-O Ax Form, MagiShine, KyoryuSilver/Torin, etc). When deciding on a suit actor for Dente, action director Fujita suggested Jirou-san, saying, "We need someone who can lead Chinen-kun (Shouma) in the acting." When new actors play the main roles, it is very important for them to interact with seniors actors on the filming sets.
The voice is provided by Tadano Yohei. Usually the voice actors won't see the acting footages until the day of the dubbing, but as expected he played the image of Uncle Dente perfectly. Tadano-san has worked in Toei's toku shows before, appearing both face-to-face and as a voice actor in various productions.
In Super Light Warrior Shanzelion, Tadano-san and Jirou-san were enemy characters. Jirou-san was the suit actor for Shanzelion, and Tadano-san voiced a monster that fought against him. Now, the two of them have transcended time and are playing the same character.
Agents
Agents are part of the Stomach family. Depending on who created them, the glowing parts on their masks and parts of their costumes are different colors, and they act according to their master's instructions. If you pay attention to which agent did what, you might be able to see their intentions...!?
They have many different duties. Acting as a liaison between the Stomach family and part-time workers, collecting and sorting human press, delivering goods, fighting with Gavv...
They're just as hardworking as the Gochizo! I'm worried that the savage Stomach family won't be as kind to them (lol).
Human press are graded according to quality, and the compensation for part-time workers varies depending on the delivered quantity and quality.
Bite Granuto
The Granuto looked like a slimy mushroom, but in his human form he has silky smooth hair, which creates a nice contrast (lol).
The human form was played by Nishino Junichiro. He was hiding out in the human world as a street performer, so we asked the very talented Nishino, who is also good at juggling, to play him! Please look forward to his street performance next time.
Welcome back Shouma
Gavv started as a road movie about a man who constantly collapses and was picked up by others. But after making up his mind, Shouma returns to HappyPare because he agrees with Sachika's philosophy.
Give him a chance! From here, he settles down and begins his training as a jack-of-all-trades. Look forward to the colorful HappyPare life that begins with Shouma and the Gochizo!
Huh, who's that? Oh, this is the director directing. (Fully dog mode!)

Re: KR Gavv 05
with a better informed rewatch, a couple notes I picked up:
Dente said he modified Shouma's gavv, but didn't say he made it full stop, meaning Shouma definitely had a stomach mouth like the rest of his family.
I already caught that Dente was voiced by the JP dub voice for Rick, but I didn't know he was the one who invented the ability to turn people into spice, and thus the Dark Candies as well. given the whole "spice" thing is human emotions, it's extra funny that it was invented by technically Rick Sanchez, because canonically in Rick and Morty there's the multiversal Citadel of Ricks location where a bunch of different Ricks and Mortys live, and one episode shows off that they have a snack called "Simple Rick's" where they took a Rick who didn't get into super science, who had a really happy home life, and they hook him up to a machine where they keep him unconscious with those happy memories on a loop and use the brain chemicals those make to flavor a candy wafer.
meaning this is two series where an old man voiced by Yohei Tadano made a candy flavored with human happiness.
also, a head's up that you forget the close bracket on your spoiler tag and lost the sentence you meant to have after it.
I also note, based on the voices, that the helmet/mask shape is gender coded, with the male ones having side bits pointing up kinda like horns/head wings, and the female ones lack those.

next ep preview spoiler
seems Sachika finds the gochizo, and she says "gochi" when talking about them, so betting she ends up being the one to name them that term.
we've already seen the whole "different flavors" thing, actually. Punching Gummy and Kicking Gummy are Soda and Orange flavored, respectively, with Poppin being grape, and also Shouma's marshmallow bag last episode had two different flavors, hence both Fuwa and Maru being made. I'm more curious if they're an in-universe explanation for which gochizo provide a form and which are purely assist types that give a new attack.FangTrigger wrote: ↑Sun Sep 29, 2024 12:05 pm So different flavors produce different effects huh? Kinda curious how they're going to go about this in later episodes.
Spoiler
Second Rider next episode. Interested in seeing that device he uses to transform with. It looks like a gun or some kind of knuckle type weapon.[/spoiler
Solid episode this week as well. We got backstory, plot progression, and hints at deeper plots to be explored in later episodes. I wonder if the handywoman is gonna get some Rider gear too?

I fully noticed the color coding this episode, finally, yeah. I feel like I might've picked up on it a little last episode, but then not actually connected the dots all the way. I thought one of the twins' agents last week was white, though, while the other was blue.Yaiba wrote: ↑Sun Sep 29, 2024 1:05 pm So, the agents are Stomach family's minions and their visor are color coded. The ones who chased Shouma in ep1 were red, Lango's agents. Jeebh and Shita's were blue. The orange one was probably Nyelv's as hinted in the preview.
I also note, based on the voices, that the helmet/mask shape is gender coded, with the male ones having side bits pointing up kinda like horns/head wings, and the female ones lack those.

Makes you wonder what the actual V-Cinema's gonna be like.Mxylv wrote: ↑Sun Sep 29, 2024 11:49 am I suspected the bright palette wasn't going to reflect the show's actual tone, but even most of the darker recent entries had their first act look like more or less brainless fun. They're really emphasizing the tragedy of Shouma's situation, but the level of detail feels more like a Gaiden/TTFC special. It doesn't feel utterly out of place the way I thought Spanner's two-part backstory was in the middle of a more happy-go-lucky season, but it's pretty gritty.
