You know this guy is a bad guy since he has a bad haircut

Oh, I didn't realize the rangers backstories are revealed in the scene with the rangers in a circle. So the girl is chasing after a girl. Green guy has some relationship with his grandma? Yellow likes robos. Blue lost his fans. And red is after his... mom?

That old store owner looks kinda familiar

Yellow hates women

I relaly hope the bad guy queen is a cool enemy robo

It probably helps that the blue this year really looks like he could be an idol

Love it for Bouquet that she gets to walk around the city only to fall in love with blue.

Was that perfume from those silly DonBrother promos from before the show started?

Japan's prime minister is so cool. Must be nice to have a leader who helps the people

Is this monster of the week a reference to a past sentai? If so, nothing's jumping out to me

Marupi is having fun. Her mech is sick too. If nothing else, the mecha fights are pretty good sof ar

What? The Don Momotarou guy can use Jetman?

The collateral damage from Blue's robo should be like 3 9/11s

After two episodes we finally get a proper introduction to the female member of the team... and it's brief and kind of weird? And green just appears in a blink and you'll miss it scene

Oh, green has a weird twist. I don't know what to think about that. Oh shit, the Asahi page was changed to match that? What the

Three episodes in, and it's entertaining and all, but I feel like I weirdly don't know a lot about red, blue, or yellow. I'm a little worried that there's not much to them besides blue is an idol, yellow loves god, and red is an alien who hates humans. We don't have group dynamics because they're not technically a team yet, so I was kind of hoping their individual personalities would stand out more

Much less the world building. In Gokaiger, it was easy. All the past sentai are real and can potentially show up. Here, we've got the parallel world Universes, with some people having rings of past sentai... but why? Did they all get it like Hoeru or did they just find it on the street? Does it mean anything that multiverse Taiya can transform into King-Ohger here? Fun wacky adventures of the week are fine, but I do hope we get some answers sooner than later

Three episodes in and already I'm getting leery because the storytelling reminds me A LOT of Donbrothers.

So many questions and somehow I don't think they're ever getting explained. If they don't explain why Yellow is so fanatic about TegaSword and whether or not there are more of these assholes running around I'm going to be very peeved, but seeing as everyone seems to accept it instead of going "what the hell is your problem", I'm pretty sure this is another thing I'll never know.

No way, DonBrothers was way better by this point. We already had such strong characters, the riddle of who Don Momotarou was, and we hadn't even gotten into pink and black's stuff yet in earnest I think

Yeah DonBro started off strong, it just started turning its wheels around and around by the halfway point.

Also, why do all politicians have names that take the format toko-something? In Boonboomgers it was Tokoyari. Here it's Tokonatsu.

I said it last week, they're doing the Donbros thing of not really explaining stuff yet. The problem is that Donbrothers had enjoyable characters. Here they're doing the King-Ohger thing of making every character an unlikeable prick, but unlike in King-Ohger, it feels like we barely get any of the characters. Prime Minister Momotaro felt like the star here. We've barely had the Gozyugers in Gozyuger, it feels.

They're doing the Decade thing of having the old suits worn by brand new characters, but much like with Decade, that ruins the thrill. I don't get excited seeing the Don Momotaro suit, because it's not Taro in there, and he's not even really using any of Don Momotaro's weapons or moves.

Next week is Green's focus, and I assume 5 will be Black's. Then maybe we can finally get some scenes where the Gozyugers discuss something vaguely plot relevant, rather than just hanging out with guest characters.
Seen:
Super Sentai: Fiveman onwards
Kamen Rider: Ichigou-Skyrider, all the Heisei/Reiwa series except the American shows.
Precure: DokiDoki-Go Pri
Metal Heroes: Gavan

The enemy is marriage themed and has a giant Queen. I read a theory somewhere that maybe Tegasword and the Queen were a couple. They had an argument, and now it's also everyone's problem. I think that would be hilarious if it were true.

So the core 5 is getting super powers from the rings. Do the Sentai Rings also give powers to their users?

Yellow's expression when he saw old man Green was just golden.

Hahahahah omg that's genius. Well played, Toei-san!

💍The Greengrocer
The part-time job this time was the greengrocer. By the way, this isn't just any greengrocer, it's a "You can look great greengrocer." If you look closely, you'll see that there's a photo booth and fruits were displayed like ornaments... The setting was that the greengrocer was run by a shop owner who wants to "go viral" on today's social media. It's this strong desire for popularity that attracted No-One's attention.

This was directed by Director Yamaguchi Kyohei, including Hoeru's headgear. During the costume fittings, the staff got excited trying out which headgear would look best on him lol.

The role of the greengrocer owner was played by Fukuyoshi Hisao-san. Originally, the plan was for him to not wear a headgear, but during the costume fitting, the apple looked so good on Fukuyoshi-san that we decided to have him wear one!

💍The youngest ultra-charismatic Prime Minister, Atami Tokonatsu!
The Universe Warrior with the ring who can transform into Don Momotarou! (The portable shrine was of course the same one used in Donbro.) The reason we chose Don Momotarou as the Prime Minister was because the "Don" of Japan is the Prime Minister. Is that a pun?

As Producer Matsuura said before, the characters who transform into the Reds will not follow the original characters charistics, but will be depicted as new Gozyuger characters. As you've probably noticed, the Tegaswords held by the Ring Warriors other than the Gozyugers are silver. Their transformation movements are also a little different from those of the Gozyugers, so be sure to pay attention to that as well!

And the person playing Atami Tokonatsu is... Nanase Kou! Nanase-san stole the show last week when his appearances were announced, and he also had a great career in the Land of Light. He even made an appearance on Sunday morning now! The Prime Minister will continue to appear in future episodes, so please look forward to it!

The portable shrine jet was a scene that Writer Akiko was particularly fond of. And the peach perfume that Tokonatsu used was also the official Don Brothers perfume released by Fairy Tail. If you want to be enveloped in the same scent, search for "Don Brothers perfume"!
Image
https://fairytail.jp/donbro/

So, let's introduce everyone who appeared in his lecture. The girl who was in trouble for spilling ketchup was Yamaguchi Ouka-san, and the old man carrying the luggage was Hirose Mitsuru-san! Next it's Hoeru's turn! The young man who was the victim of the laundry was played by Itsuki Miyadi-san!

Thanks to Prime Minister, Hoeru had a mysterious surge of confidence, but in the end, it was the Prime Minister who stole all the popularity. He's a true politician, using those around him to his advantage.

Despite all that happened, Hoeru managed to rescue the greengrocer owner. The scene where he received a "thank you" from the owner was wonderful!
Being the most popular person is great, but if you receive a heartfelt thank you from just one person, it means you've become that person's number one!

💍No-one
A distinctive feature of the No-Ones is that all of them wear a NO.1 belt around their waist. This time's No-One was the No.1 most popular, so his head was a spotlight, and he had a like buttons and ♡ buttons on its chest. He even had a beauty pageant-style crown and sash on his arm!

The design was provided by Hisa Masato-san, and he was voiced by by Tanaka Mio-san! Thank you as always!

💍Ichikawa Sumino
Sumino is a girl who uses many different faces. The basic setting of her character is "cunning girl," but that doesn't seem to be her true self.

I wonder if she was really surprised by the parfait's price...? Ryuugi was shocked, but a 2500 yen parfait was certainly expensive... It seems that even Ryuugi, who is surprisingly naive, has a secret too.

Sumino left like the wind for a high-rise apartment social gathering or something. The scriptwriter, Inoue Akiko, said that Sumino's character image is a "Minato Ward girl"「港区女子」. Minato Ward in Tokyo is an upscale commercial area where wealthy people live. Women who enjoy dining at fashionable restaurants and drinking at bars in this area are referred to as "Minato girls." However, it also carries a derogatory meaning of women who hang around in Minato Ward for wealthy men.

It is quite difficult to symbolically recreate a Minato Ward girl... The director, costumes, makeup artists, and the on-site staff all secretly complain every time. But with combine effort of the staff, they managed to solidify the image!

💍Byakuya Rikuo
Speaking of popular... Rikuo-sama won't stay quiet!

This was the first performance of Rikuo's signature character song, "Wild Feelings"! This song was produced by an incredibly impressive lineup,
Lyricist: Oikawa Neko
Composer/arranger: Komorita Minoru
Choreography: Smile Saki, who is also well-known for Boonboomger's ED dance

And here's a story about the struggles he faced behind the scenes! Suzuki-san, who plays Rikuo, despite his busy schedule, managed to master the dance in just two practice sessions! In fact, this also overlapped with the practice sessions for the opening dance! Suzuki-san was the only one who had to master the choreography for two songs.
Image

Amazingly, it has been decided that the Rikuo merchandise worn by Rikunists in the main story will be on sale!
Image
https://p-bandai.jp/fashion/c0001/c000124/rikuo/

💍Miss Bouquet
Speaking of Rikunists, we can't forget about Miss Bouquet! Due to the filming circumstances, we had to film her jumping around in high heels and screaming as she reacted passionately! Although Bouquet appeared elegant and cool, she was actually quite passionate! She was incredibly upset in the robot battle that followed. It seems that Bouquet is a person with incredible emotional ups and downs.

💍GozyuEagle
GozyuEagle joins the battle!! Just when you think he's de-transformed...

Grandpa!!!!!!?!?!?!?!

Who was that good-looking guy calling himself GozyuEagle that we saw at the production announcement? For those of you who are wondering this, don't worry, Toei didn't deceive you! Be sure to tune in next week to find out the truth!!!

💍The Cheer Squad
The cheer squad also makes an appearance when VS Universe Warriors! The cheer squad has been a hot topic since episode 1, but wouldn't it be fun if the cheer squad came before the battle? Producer Matsuura came up with the idea because he thought it would be nice for people who aren't heroes to be cheered on on a Sunday morning. Main Director Tasaki also likes the cheer squad, so the main pillar of a "cheer space" suddenly appeared in the script!

The cheer squad was played by the members of the Chuo University Cheerleading Club! The cheer squad and cheerleaders are the real deal! The choreography was also thought up by the Chuo University members in a short amount of time! Thank you so much, everyone!!

By the way, in the case of VS Universe Warriors, the cheers are a little different from those in the Number One Battle! Please rewatch it!

Best episode so far.
I liked Tokonatsu's underhanded method to win the popularity contest, glad this isnt gonna be a series where Hoeru wins every week
Monster was funny, his defeat was hilarious
Bouquet and Sumino seem like fun characters
so happy to have mech battles where the cg is only in the gun's attacks.
wonder what the twist with Green is gonna be.
no tease on who Ryusoulred is

I do like the twist that the minister was only helping Hoeru to improve his own popularity. It's weirdly practical

Does it? The interaction felt a bit like a non sequitor

Speaking of which, I figured out why I hate the Blue mecha fight. The dramatic irony of Bouquet fighting her crush is totally obvious to the audience, but none of the writing plays with it. It's like Akiko wrote the foundation of the scene and went "isn't that ironic" and then left the audience to do the rest of the work of making it fun. On its own, is it really that funny for Bouquet to get mad at blue who is secretly her crush?

I don't know what to think of Sumino, but it's pretty obvious to me t hat she's only close to Don Momotarou to get his ring

For clarity, the part in the production notes where it says that Nanase Kou “had a great career in the Land of Light” is a subtle reference to his previous role as Kirisaki, the main villain of Ultraman Taiga. Another being the pose he does where he lowers his hand and then raises it up during a rally (that was main character Hiroyuki’s transformation pose, sans the raised finger). Why does this make his casting funny? A major Legend character returning for Taiga was Ultraman Taro

Having an episode that's basically a tribute to DonBrothers is not helping Gozyuger with the DonBros comparisons. But in all seriousness, I'll put a pause on it this week since this episode is all about DonBros. But Inoue had best get it out of her system here, otherwise this is going to be a long year.

As for the episode at hand, I'm not a DonBros fan. So even though AU Don Momotaro is a different character from the original, this isn't an episode I'll ever be holding in particularly high regard. It's a solid 3.

So much to my surprise, we get an explanation for yellow's super-strength right off the bat. While having it come an episode after it was demoed is a bit sub-optimal, I can work with it - and I appreciate it wasn't left as a dangling question for a dozen episodes. So our heroes have civvy superpowers; interesting. While this is a common PR trope, when's the last time Sentai has done this? I feel like it's been ages (Go-Busters?).

And I suppose this raises the question of what Green and Black's powers will be. So far we're holding to the five senses - and dollars to donuts that Green's will be super vision to go with the eagle motif. But that leaves taste for Black, and taste is a very, very boring superpower (especially as it overlaps with smell pretty heavily). So I do hope it's something more exciting than that.

The civvy superpowers do worry me a bit though, as the mere existence of some of these things can easily break the narrative. Super strength, for example, means that Yellow should be able to mop the floor with just about anyone. Which is why Go-Busters put limits/drawbacks on their abilities, to justify why they aren't used all the time.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of Japan is a bona fide transforming superhero... This is definitely going to be one of those wacky episodes. The utter normalcy of how the situation is treated is kind of throwing me for a loop because it's so far out there - and this is a series that wrecks parts of Tokyo with giant robots every week. It's one thing to have a random person turn into a superhero, but then you have Shinzo Abe turning into a peach powerhouse. It makes the suspension of disbelief difficult.

But hiring experienced toku actors to play the AU Rangers is certainly paying off. While I'm not familiar with this guy's previous work, he clearly knows how to play a transforming superhero. So he sells the bit very, very well. Which is important if he's going to be a recurring foe.

I'm not sure the writing is really there to clearly and cleanly justify him being an antagonist, though. His popularity is of his own accord - there's no evidence he's using any kind of power to cheat - and while he did help Red primarily to benefit his own popularity, he none the less did help Red. So although he's clearly an egotist, he's not a villain or otherwise a bad guy. Which on this current track is going to make it hard to root against him when he fights the Gyozugers again (if he's not a bad guy, what makes the titular heroes the good guys in such a fight?).

Otherwise, the MOTW is kind of unremarkable. Having an AU Ranger with a major presence eats up in to a lot of the screen time that would otherwise go into the MOTW's plans. I'm actually more impressed by the poor stunties wearing the mook outfits this week who had to carry the MOTW; those suits aren't light!

And it's good to see that Bouquet is getting some screen time this week as well. Fire Candle has owned every scene he's been in so far, which hasn't given Bouquet much of a chance to make an impression. I'm a bit confused why she's even bothering to wander around Earth, but if you cast a face actors for the villains, you absolutely need to take full advantage of that and get them off of the sound stage now and then. Being bored with existence and looking for something novel is definitely an interesting character trait - and a distinctly human one at that. And having her go gaga over Blue's singing is hilarious.

I'm even more surprised that she has her own giant robot. Since she's (apparently) not a street fighter, this means she'll be able to get into the action in other ways. However they're going to have to do something about how poorly her pink wig films in motion against CGI backgrounds; it is truly atrocious.
Pink hair artifacts
Image
With this third robo, I suppose they're setting up a Go-Busters like situation where there's a regular rotating roster of enemy robos, rather than having the MOTW grow every week. That was one of my favorite bits of that show, so that could be very cool. Though if that's the case, they're going to need to do something to dress up the enemy robos so that the heroes aren't fighting the exact same bot week after week.

Though having seen the enemy robos so far, it's just finally occurred to me how little I like Tegasword's design.:( Now that I really examine it, it's all rather boring. The base robo is a streamlined gold-on-silver body without much in the way of defining features. While something like Boonboomger Robo was very (very) clunky, it was visually distinct. You won't confuse Tegasword for another Sentai robo, but it's so generic that it borders on being forgettable. Being a solo robot rather than a combiner makes it a bit harder to develop a memorable design, but it can certainly be done, as evidenced by Megaranger and Go-Busters. Though I don't think being a giant hand that transforms into a giant robot is doing it any favors here, as the giant hand form doesn't seem to be useful for anything. I can only hope/pray that we'll get a team robo down the line.

In any case, this week was another good robo fight. It was noticeably shorter than the previous two, but there was clearly still quite a bit of effort put into it, both with the projectiles and the scenery crashing down around them. So even if I'm not enjoying the individual robos, the overall fights are still fun.

Yellow loves giant robots. He is a man committed to a mission, and has little time for anything superfluous.
It probably helps that the blue this year really looks like he could be an idol
I assume he was singing his own song as well?
Was that perfume from those silly DonBrother promos from before the show started?
DonFragrance? Technically no. That promo was for the villains' fragrances. But it seems there is one for Don Momotarou as well...
What? The Don Momotarou guy can use Jetman?
More interesting, perhaps, is that it's not a full transformation. He does not become a Jetman. Instead he stays as DonMomo but gets some wings. Which makes me wonder if we're not actually going to see all the Sentai reds in this series, with some series' being limited to power-ups?
Oh, green has a weird twist. I don't know what to think about that. Oh shit, the Asahi page was changed to match that? What the
Credit where credit is due: that's a good twist. That we've already seen the regular actor for green means we know how this will end, but that makes it an interesting howdunit.
Three episodes in, and it's entertaining and all, but I feel like I weirdly don't know a lot about red, blue, or yellow. I'm a little worried that there's not much to them besides blue is an idol, yellow loves god, and red is an alien who hates humans. We don't have group dynamics because they're not technically a team yet, so I was kind of hoping their individual personalities would stand out more
That is the downside to having experienced actors as the AU Rangers. It means that some of the episode has to be dedicated to what's essentially a guest star. Hopefully this is just something that's front-loaded, rather than going on all season.

I don't get excited seeing the Don Momotaro suit, because it's not Taro in there, and he's not even really using any of Don Momotaro's weapons or moves.
I like how you put this. It's cool to see the suits, but the fact that it's not the same character within the suit certainly diminishes the value. It keeps Gozyuger distinct from Gokaiger (which essentially had the old suits running around under enemy control), but it comes at a high cost.
Yaiba wrote: Mon Mar 03, 2025 6:51 am The enemy is marriage themed and has a giant Queen. I read a theory somewhere that maybe Tegasword and the Queen were a couple. They had an argument, and now it's also everyone's problem. I think that would be hilarious if it were true.
Oh, this is brilliant! I am going to be genuinely disappointed if something like this doesn't end up being the case.

It would also explain why the two groups seem to share some technology. e.g. both groups are capable of sending/pulling things through hammerspace.
So the core 5 is getting super powers from the rings. Do the Sentai Rings also give powers to their users?
I'm doubtful, if only for pacing reasons. But we shall see.

Does Bouquet wear high heels?
Yes, she does. Pink ones, at that.

(Being pragmatic here, it seems like it's rare for the actresses not to wear heels at least most of the time. They're so short...)

You aren't wrong. But I feel like these would qualify as both platform shoes and high heels due to what looks to be a 3+ inch heel?

>So much to my surprise, we get an explanation for yellow's super-strength right off the bat. While having it come an episode after it was demoed is a bit sub-optimal, I can work with it - and I appreciate it wasn't left as a dangling question for a dozen episodes.

I'm honestly surprised we got an explanation. With Sentai, it can work off toon logic/physics

>So our heroes have civvy superpowers; interesting. While this is a common PR trope, when's the last time Sentai has done this? I feel like it's been ages (Go-Busters?).

Makes you wonder what green and blacks' are. Green to turn young?

>And I suppose this raises the question of what Green and Black's powers will be. So far we're holding to the five senses - and dollars to donuts that Green's will be super vision to go with the eagle motif. But that leaves taste for Black, and taste is a very, very boring superpower (especially as it overlaps with smell pretty heavily). So I do hope it's something more exciting than that.

Oh, are they all sense related? I guess thatmakes sense

>I'm not sure the writing is really there to clearly and cleanly justify him being an antagonist, though. His popularity is of his own accord

If all of them are rivals, then the mere possession of a ring makes him the enemy of our group of spandex heroes

I still would like an expanation of what MOTW is supposed to be. Is it a voting tally? Not my favorite design so far, in a series where the design has been its strongest asset so far

From Yaiba's translation of the notes, it sounds like he also learned the choreography really fast. What at triple threat!

I mean, in theory that's a pretty cool idea. I just don't see Toei putting a lot of money into doing this after a few months

>It means that some of the episode has to be dedicated to what's essentially a guest star. Hopefully this is just something that's front-loaded, rather than going on all season.

It kind of seems like red and black are new to acting, so it is a relief that they're not as awkward as they are in the announcement meeting (hint hint, nudge nudge)

>It keeps Gozyuger distinct from Gokaiger (which essentially had the old suits running around under enemy control), but it comes at a high cost.

It's a little frustrating because Toei did the perfect anniversary series... exactly once. Then did a lot of shitty offshoots that make people more mad about anniversaries than anything else

For suited characters, sure. But I need an explanation if a purely untransformed Yellow is running around hurling large trees.

That would seem to be the case. The left side is thumb-ups, and the right side is hearts. Both are types of likes/votes, depending on the platform. Meanwhile the top of the head seems to be a spotlight, and I'm not sure what the shoulders are. It's not the worst design, and some effort has been put in. But I agree it's not an especially good design.

Okay, I'm legitimately impressed. Even though the street performance was obviously lip syncing, learning all of that in short order for a weekly series is not an easy feat.

You aren't wrong, sadly. They keep trying to catch lightning in a bottle here.

To be fair, Toei has been going out of their way to show off Bouquet. Even back in episode 1 they put in a very clear panning shot of her, starting with her feet. So it's kind of hard not to notice it.
