Re: Samurai Sentai Shinkenger 01 released
I can see how something can be made out of fire, out of water, out of earth, out of wood. How can something be made out of heaven? Isn't the entire point of an element being that it's a component or the most pure or undividable material of something?

Well you can't divide air right?
And airs a valuable component in things like... balloons?

if you want to extend it... you can have light, dark, ice, lightening, metal...

Chinese elements are fire, water, earth, wood, and metal, not in that order.

Samurai are Chinese now?
Also I don't think heaven as an element works just because wind or air is. That's just redefining the word to mean something else

You cant really differentiate chinese or japanese as this it all derived from taoismKogashi wrote:Chinese elements are fire, water, earth, wood, and metal, not in that order.
its all about balance and the maintenance of balance
the kanji for the element "metal" is Kin which also directly translates as gold.
the main 5 elements should be Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth.
altho not in the same exact order, the japanse has used this to name the days of the week...
with the addition of Moon and Sun
but... no wind? no heaven no sky...
anyone remember who captain planet was?
was there an element "Heart"??

In at least Chinese medicine, Wind isn't included because 1) They believed wind was caused by other elements to begin with. and 2) Wind in general caused ailments and the like. That's why in Fung Shui, you never have your bed line up in any way with windows or the like.

Re: Samurai Sentai Shinkenger 01 released
That you mentioned Fung Shui... that literally means Wind Water
and just going back to "heaven", that really should be translated as "Sky"
and that is the direct opposite of "Ground" or perhaps "Earth"

Altho not an academically acclaimed reference, but...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classical_element
Classical elements in Japan
Main article: Five elements (Japanese philosophy)
Japanese traditions use a set of elements called the 五大 (go dai, literally "five great"). These five are earth, water, fire, wind/air, and void. These came from Buddhist beliefs; the classical Chinese elements (五行, go gyô) are also prominent in Japanese culture, especially to the influential Neo-Confucianists during the Edo period.
Earth represented things that were solid.
Water represented things that were liquid.
Fire represented things that destroyed.
Wind/Air represented things that moved.
Void represented things not of our everyday life.
i think... I am correct in saying pink/sky/heaven = wind
