Re: Attack/Henshin Translations
I could've sworn Kabuto was in reference to the beetle of the origami they're using, just like swordfish and tiger, and not "helmet". So the Japanese Rhinoceros Beetle, which in Japanese is called the kabutomushi, should be called "helmet bug"?

Well, it is "兜" which literally means "Helmet".

Re: Attack/Henshin Translations
Is the helmet named after the bug or vice-versa? I'm just curious.
But in Shinkenger's case I think they mean the japanese rhinoceros beetle (there are other kinds of rhinoceros around the world).

Re: Attack/Henshin Translations
Think, while it is a beetle, that there is also a type of samurai helmet/mask thing referred to as a Kabuto helmet... Could be wrong.

Re: Attack/Henshin Translations
My gut instinct is that the helmet meaning came first, then someone saw the bug one day and went "hey, that bug looks like it's wearing a helmet" and called the bug the same thing.
The opposite story: "I'm wearing this thing on my head, it has no name, but there's this bug called a kabuto. I know, I'll call my head thing a kabuto" makes less sense

Re: Attack/Henshin Translations
But, takenoko, are all helmets caled kabuto or just that samurai helmet? Because the opposite story could go like this: hey what a fancy helmet I have made! It reminds me of a certain beetle. I'm gonna name the helmet after it.
Where are the japanese etymologists when we need them?

The only other word for helmet that I see is tetsubou which means iron cap. Modern helmets obviously aren't samurai helmet and aren't called kabuto. They just use "helmet" or "'met"
>Because the opposite story could go like this: hey what a fancy helmet I have made! It reminds me of a certain beetle. I'm gonna name the helmet after it.
The limited number of words for helmets makes me doubt that. What would you call the helmet to begin with? Besides the verb kaburu (different kanji than kabuto) means to put on one's head. Kabuto probably originally came from that, then was used to name the bug with the giant thing on its head

Re: Attack/Henshin Translations
Wiki says that the beetle was named after the helmet. I know it isn't the ultimate source of info or anything, but it is enough for me.

Re: Attack/Henshin Translations
These translations are mostly from the TL notes in the episode that it first appears in. So don't complain that we don't put these translations for the attacks in the episodes themselves. Just be thankful that you have a one-stop place for the translations.Runba wrote:still dont understand why you cant just put these in there... whatever e_e

For me
Takeru Saying, "Raging-flame giant cutting blade Cannon Mode." in the subbs is ridiculous. Keeping these words is like keeping the hornorifics. T/Dono means Lord and sama means master or the like so if they dont keep these hororifics they will be calling Takeru Master Lord. Or in terms of Decade, Tsukasa calling Natsumi natsumikan will be Miss Natsumi.
