If you don't have an irc client, there's a couple irc clients and scripts that you can use. Personally I prefer the sysreset script which is based on mirc. Trillian does irc too apparently as well as some browser scripts.
Guide to connecting to irc

One thing to note, if you watch our old subs or look at the banner at the top of the forums, it still says the old server irc.zirc.org which we no longer use. If you try to go to those chans you'll be auto-banned, here's why:

When the zirc operators and channels migrated en mass from zirc to synirc, we left a message in the topic that we moved to synirc.org . Well the head of zirc banned all those channels, so people won't be able to see the topic. Kind of a petty thing to do, but whatever. Just remember that we're on synirc and no longer on zirc.

Remember to play by the rules, try not to be too much of an obnoxious dick, and remember that the Internet is not srs bzness. Let's try to have a little fun while we're here.

This opens a connection to IRC using javascript from your web browser. If you don't want to install a program for using IRC, this is for you.

Would it help people if a short quicklist of irc commands were provided? I mean, once you connected, it's just a chat room, but I assume some people will want to do more than that.

After connecting (login) to the IRC server, then you need to join the channel with the following command (IRC client program dependent): /join #tv-nihonchat

If you are using the WEB frontend on SynIRC, then the following procedure should be followed:
In the "Nickname" box, add your preferred nick.
Nick example: WEB_KarmenRiderFan100
Please be creative when choosing your nick, but do not use questionable words and/or word combinations.
The "channel" box must be set to the following: #tv-nihonchat

Please state your client and version number (if known) for any followup questions.

WARNING! Do not act like an idiot. By doing so, you can be temporarily or permanently banned. In worst case scenario, your whole ISP/country can be permanently banned from the channel/SynIRC. Also, do not ban evade if one have been banned, as that can lead to you and probably your ISP/country to be permanently banned from the channel/SynIRC in the worst case scenario.

I quess the basic command like how to send a PM, leave/quit the channel, disconnect form the IRC network, get the topic/MOTD after one have joined the channel, how to get the rules for #tv-nihonchat/#tv-nihon channel displayed (if any), and ofcourse /me command (if supported) should be described/listed. Advanced command like /dcc , /ctcp and simmilar, probably not. I could probably write a sticky for the basic/commonly used IRC commands for normal users. Could also write some guides on setting up IRC clients too if wanted. (If possible, then images used in the guides (if any images used) should be hosted directly from the forum server.)

Sometimes ya gotta sit there for a while before any conversation starts. Like, I've been in there for hours and all you see is people joining and quitting. xD

I was taking a nap, so that's my excuse. I saw you come in on the log and leave like 24 minutes later.

The really active parts of the channel are usually right after work to bed time for the eastern folk. So I usually miss people like Adam or Kouga by like 5 minutes since I get off work at 8 pm
